Adrianna Mary (Engels) Scharnhorst, 94, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016. She was born Aug. 8, 1921, in Fargo, N.D., to Arnold and Cornelia (Van Heesch) Engels. When she was a year old, the family moved to New Rockford, N.D., and rented a farm east of town. At age 6, shortly before her father died, they moved to the original homestead that her mother was raised on. As the oldest child, she was responsible for helping out with farm chores and looking after her four siblings. She always talked about one ornery cow that liked to step on her toes during milking. After graduating from Fargo's Sacred Heart Academy in 1941, she worked at a hospital in Bottineau, N.D., for the summer before moving to Chicago to live with relatives. Over the next five years, she worked at a rayon factory in the Montgomery Ward catalog department and as a telephone operator. In her quest to get away from the cold winters, she transferred with the telephone company to Oakland, Calif.
In 1948, Effie, Adri's childhood friend, asked that she come to Idaho to help with taking care of Effie's young family of four, as well as work at the Genesee Hotel, owned by Effie and her husband. This is where Adri met John Scharnhorst, her future husband. They were married Oct. 29, 1949, in Genesee, and 11 children were born to this beautiful union. After briefly living in Genesee and then in Headquarters, the family moved to Lewiston in 1958, where Adri lived the rest of her life.
Over the next 58 years, she devoted her time to being a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Adri loved to bake, and she will forever be remembered for her homemade cinnamon rolls/bread, lemon meringue pies, angel food cakes and jams and jellies. She also enjoyed tending to her rock garden, roses and petunias, embroidery, crocheting, doing word and jigsaw puzzles, and reading magazines (she called herself "Magazine Maggie"). Adri cherished her time with her grandchildren, whether it was teaching them how to make bread, sew, fixing puzzles, driving them for ice cream, reading to them or attending their special events. They lovingly called her "Grams."
Adri was strongly devoted to her Catholic faith. Over the years, she served as secretary and treasurer for the Our Lady of Lourdes School and was actively involved in the Altar Society, Legion of Mary and Women of Lourdes groups. Always in search of other interests to grow and engage in, she joined The Daytime Toastmistress Club, learning to express her ideas with ease.
After the death of her husband in 1978, she enjoyed traveling. With the family raised, she visited her daughters throughout the U.S., as well as Europe. Adri's other travels included a trip to Jerusalem and a cruise to Alaska. This led to other hobbies, including collecting plates and postcards from various states and countries that she visited.
Adri will fondly be remembered for her loving, caring, sensitive nature, but most of all her big smile and laughter.
She is survived by her loving children, sons Bill (Dixie), Louis (Tami), and David (Merilynn), all of Lewiston; daughters Kathy Beals (Rob), and Conny Green (Webb), both of Seattle, Therese Erickson (Don) of Clarkston, Marina Beirnes (Phil) of Enumclaw, Wash., Colleen Scharnhorst-Jensen (Bret) of Tacoma; and daughter-in-law Linda of Lewiston; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, Herb Engels and Jerry Engels of New Rockford, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Adri was preceded in death by her parents; husband John; sons John Jr., Kevin and Jerry; sister JoAnn Anderson; and brother Bill Engels.
The family wishes to thank Pat Fowler and her wonderful staff at the Golden Girls Residential Care for the loving care they provided Adri these past six months and to the "ladies" for their beautiful friendship.
