Barney "Shane" Smith was born Dec. 9, 1972, to Barney E. and Kathryn Smith on a cold wintry day in Clarkston. He was joined later by a sister, Stacey Michelle, whom he dearly loved. He was always a bubbly little boy, with blond hair and the most beautiful blue eyes you ever saw.
The family soon moved from Lewiston to Clarkston, where his father worked for Washington Water Power. He went to school from K-12 in the Clarkston School District. After his parents divorced, Kathy married Wayne Brown and Barney married Patti O'Shaughnessy. Shane felt he was richly blessed to have two additional families to love, which included new brothers and sisters, and a stepfather and stepmother who loved him as their own.
Shane had many friends all through the years and played baseball, basketball and football from Little League through high school. He remained close friends with Justin Jones and Shawn Raykovich, "The Fearsome Threesome." He enjoyed the competition and the friendships these sports allowed.
Shane continued his education at Eastern Washington University and received his bachelor of arts degree in business management, with an emphasis in hospitality/hotel management. He was the recipient of EWU's leadership award. While there, he joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and many of those friends have remained "brothers" indeed.
He was soon employed with the Hampton Inn in Spokane and continued his employment with The Hotel Group, which took him to the Holiday Inn Express in Pullman, Plaza Inn and Suites in Ashland, Ore., and The Hilton Garden Inn in Kennewick, where he helped open hotels and employed many valuable staff. He also managed the Courtyard in Richland and then changed to the Silver Cloud Inn in Portland, Ore., where he stayed for eight years as general manager. He loved them all as family.
Shane moved back to Clarkston in October of 2015 and worked a short time at various other jobs.
Shane had much love for his family and friends and especially Dylan, Austin and Molly, who also loved their "Uncle Shane." He loved wrestling on the floor, taking them to the aquatic center and giving them those awesome hugs, celebrating special days and birthdays. He also enjoyed his little four-legged friends: Oreo, Rugby, Bandit and his new puppy, Chewie.
Shane had more friends than money; however, he knew their value. He knew what was really important to him in life. Shane's love for friends and family never wavered, and they brought extreme joy to his heart. He was generous to a fault and always wanted to give more than he received. He was considerate of others and has remained good friends with many of his classmates.
Shane's other joys involved swimming, boating, playing baseball and feeding the fish and donkeys with his little friend, Josephine. He also loved watching sporting events. His teams were important to him and he spent many hours rooting them on. Some of the greatest social events with his friends were around many games including Seattle Seahawks, Mariners, Portland Trail Blazers, EWU, Washington State University, Gonzaga, Dallas Cowboys and, of course, his beloved Clarkston Bantams.
Shane had recently attended both CrossPoint Alliance Church and Living Heritage Church and drew from the strength and friendships he gained there.
Shane is survived by his friend and love of his life, Chiara Erickson and her daughter, Olivia; his parents, Barney and Patti Smith of Winchester and Kathy and Wayne Brown of Clarkston; and his sister, Stacey (Alan) Biging and children Dylan, Austin and Molly. Shane loved his step-family, including his brothers Eric Brown and Mitchell (Cathie) Brown of Bellingham, Wash., Michael J. O'Shaughnessy and Patrick (Jessica) O'Shaughnessy of Lewiston; and his sisters, Sara (Fritz) Schrichte of Soda Springs, Calif., and Mandy (Jonathan) Leamy of Orlando, Fla. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Cameron, Jaden, Gus, Henry, Paxton, Alicia, Olivia and Penelope; and his grandparents, Marian Smith of Lewiston and Douglas and Norma Field of Lebanon, Ore. Shane also had an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides that he cherished.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Doris C. Field, Earl and Dorothy Poirier, and William H. Smith; aunts Kay Prickett, Nancy Spears and Judy Howard; and uncle Gary Field.
Even in death, he was a generous soul as an organ donor to Life Center Northwest. Many will have a new lease on life through his gift.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at CrossPoint Alliance Church, 1330 Powers Ave., Lewiston. There will be a covered-dish dinner after the service. Feel free to bring a salad or dessert and share your memories.

I am so sorry for your unimaginable loss. I was a colleague of Shane's at the Silver Cloud and, while I while I worked in Seattle and he in Portland, I can't tell you what an impression he made on all of us. He made every boring meeting fun with his joviality and wit, and he was the one guy you really looked forward to catching up with at every gathering. He was, sincerely, one of the most hilarious and delightful people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. Words cannot express my heartbreak at his passing. I want you to know, although I'm sure you already do, he was such a big hearted guy, in what can be a cold hearted world, and I am grateful for having known him. Much love and hugs.
