Burl E. Tackett

Burl E. Tackett

9/20/1931 — 10/2/2016

Burl Tackett entered peacefully into eternal rest Oct. 2, 2016, at the Lewiston Veterans Care Center.

Burl was the sixth child born to Joe and Effie Tackett in Norman, Ark.

Burl came to Idaho first in 1948. Burl worked for the Forest Service in 1949. He became a very capable chain saw operator and timber faller for the next 47 years, taking time to work in his cousin's saw shop.

Burl was also in the Army for two years (1952-1954) in California, New Jersey and New York, in specialized training signal corps radio school. He was an amateur radio operator, starting in 1965. For years Burl maintained as many as 165 colonies of honeybees, making all the equipment needed, extracting honey, which, along with beeswax, was sold locally and commercially.

Burl so enjoyed doing "fix-it" and "re-do" work in the homes we had and the churches we were part of. Hunting and fishing were special. Burl was a volunteer for six years at Lewis-Clark State College, cutting firewood for sale to help finance the Warriors' baseball program.

On Oct. 13, 1952, Burl married Norma Altman, and together they raised two daughters. Burl is survived by his wife, Norma; daughter Judy and her husband, Tom Partington; daughter Patti McKinney; and granddaughter Kimberly Dawn McKinney, all of Moscow; sisters Doris Wyatt, Lewiston, and Shirley Johns of Hot Springs, Ark.; brother Fairrel (Phyllis), Federal Way, Wash.; sister-in-law Barbara, Winter Haven, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; many caring friends; and Hi-Dee, Burl's much-loved cat.

A celebration of life will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Living Word Missionary Baptist Church, 707 Preston Ave., Lewiston.

The family would like to thank all the wonderful workers at the Veterans Care Center. Burl, the "Old Character," knew they cared for and about him.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter would be appreciated.
