Darlene Hickman Seidel, mother of six children and a mom to any kid who walked through her door, and quite possibly the world's sweetest mother-in-law, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 13, 2015, from complications of kidney cancer. She was 81.
Darlene was born Sept. 22, 1933, in Rigby, Idaho, to Elmer and Lavon Bush Hickman. She grew up in Pocatello, graduating from Pocatello High School in 1951.
She met Clarence Seidel while he was home on leave from Korea in Pocatello in 1950, and they were married March 2, 1951. They were married until Clarence passed away in May of this year after 64 years together.
They lived in Pocatello, Blackfoot, American Falls and Paul, Idaho, as their family grew to six children, before moving to Snohomish, Wash., in 1971, and to Lewiston in 1972.
She was the mother of "The Seidel Bros. Band," and she and Clarence could be seen watching their sons as they played in many of the local watering holes. Their house was a second home to many of the members of the band as it evolved through the years. She would cook meals and sometimes provide a bed for anyone who needed one. Her house was affectionately known as "Darlene's Diner."
She loved doing crossword puzzles to keep her mind sharp, which it was right to the end. She also loved her Seattle Mariners and Seahawks and watched all of their games. She was a communicant of All Saints Catholic Church.
She is survived by her six children and their spouses, Charlene (Jim) Collier, Cody (Cindy) Seidel, Kelly Seidel and Jan Webb, Cheryl (Joe) Dickenson, Randy (Nancy) Seidel, and DeeAnn (Gary) Eberhardt; and her two brothers, Gary Hickman of New Market, Md., and Lynn Weaver of Nampa. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. We will all miss you mom!
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clarence; and sister Janet Tackett.
A burial service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens, with a rosary, funeral service and luncheon to follow at All Saints Catholic Church at 3330 14th St., Lewiston.
