Donald Joseph Scharbach passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at the age of 82.
Donald was born Aug. 21, 1933, to Joseph and Veronica (Kramer) Scharbach in Clarkston. Don attended Holy Family Catholic School. He grew up in the Clarkston home with his three sisters, Bettie, Barbara and Mary Ann. He loved bringing home a variety of old cars and stray animals. He also loved baseball and spending time with his many friends. Don attended Clarkston High School, where he graduated in 1951.
Don joined the U.S. Army in 1952 and served in Korea and Japan for two and a half years, where he served in the 24th Division and later the Honor Guard. Upon returning home, Don worked in the laundry owned by his father. He then became a delivery driver for Sunshine Baking Co. and later for Holsum Baking Co. in Lewiston.
Don had the prairie route for many years (Grangeville/Cottonwood) before taking on the Lewiston city route. Affectionately known and "Don the Bread Man," he delivered to local restaurants and grocery stores throughout the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley.
Don married Donna Shively in 1961. Don and Donna were married for 41 years, until her passing in 2002. They raised a family of three in Lewiston, Ken, Karla and Karen.
Don was an avid golfer and enjoyed the game for many years, playing courses all over the valley and especially Bryden Canyon, where in his retirement years he played most days with his golf buddies. He and Donna also enjoyed some travel after they retired, and socializing with good friends and family. He loved sports and following his favorite teams, from the Washington State University Cougs, Idaho Vandals, Gonzaga Bulldogs, to the Seahawks and Mariners.
Don always had a smile and a friendly "hello." He was a kind and wonderful man and we will miss him.
Don is survived by his son, Ken and Lisa Scharbach and their children, Kaylee and Mason of Lewiston; his daughters, Karla Scharbach of Moscow, and Karen and Jerry Henderson and her children Adam, Thomas and Taylor Cook of Spokane.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Scharbach; grandson Riley Scharbach; and sister Mary Ann Webster.
