Donna J. Carter

Donna J. Carter

8/6/1929 — 9/10/2017

Donna Jean Brady Carter, 88, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Donna was born in McKinnon, Wyo., on Aug. 6, 1929, to Simeon and Hortense Brady. She was the ninth of 10 children. Her family lived on a 200-acre ranch. Some of her chores included herding cattle, feeding chickens and carrying water from the ditch to the house. At age 7, she would bring the cows in from the pasture at night alone.

She felt loved and protected by her father. One example was when she had to feed the chickens and the rooster would chase her. Her father saw this and caught and killed the rooster; it was chicken and dumplings for dinner. It was a sad time for her when she lost her father to Rocky Mountain spotted fever when she was 8.

Her mother was unable to run the ranch alone, which necessitated the family moving to Green River, Wyo. This move was followed by numerous moves, and they eventually settled in Spanish Fork, Utah. She graduated from Spanish Fork High School, where she participated in many musical groups accompanying and singing. Music has always been an integral part of her life.

On Dec. 3, 1947, she married LaMar Verl Carter and they had six children. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on March 5, 1965.

In addition to being an incredible homemaker, she worked at JC Penney and later became a real estate agent. She was a lifelong learner and went on to attend Salt Lake Community College, receiving a certificate in word processing.

Seeking a new opportunity, she moved to Moscow and worked at Gritman Memorial Hospital, University of Idaho LDS Institute and Washington State University in Pullman. She retired from WSU and moved to Lewiston.

Her passions included her family, music, teaching and gardening. She loved spending time with her family, planning many dinners and parties, using any excuse to get the family together. She excelled at teaching piano to many children and adults and at times she had as many as 28 students. She continued to teach until only weeks before her death.

She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities, including a mission to the Los Angeles area in 1997. She had a love for missionary work and looked forward to feeding the missionaries regularly.

She is survived by her six children, Marilyn Adams (Gary), Russell Carter (Sherie), Lou Ann Carter (Glenn), Ronald Carter (Michelle), Val Carter (Jackie), and Marjean Kramer (Dave); 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vonda.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Simeon and Hortense Brady; siblings Ferl, Rex, Bill, Ned, Rhea and Flo; and granddaughter Erica and grandson Kyle.

The family wishes to thank St. Joseph Regional Medical Center Family Hospice for their continued love and support over the past six months. We especially want to thank Howard and Denise Lowe for their consistent care, love and friendship. We also want to thank all the other friends and family who visited with mom and continued to support her and her family.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 16th Street and Ripon Avenue, Lewiston. Bishop Dennis Hastings will be officiating.

Burial will follow the funeral at Normal Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being provided by Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home and Crematory.
