Erma Auer

Erma Auer

12/2/1929 — 10/13/2016

Erma M. Auer took God's hand and ascended to heaven on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, to join her husband and family that had preceded her. She passed away of heart complications while residing at Golden Girls Residential Care.

She was born to Edward and Meta Stelljes Torgerson on Dec. 2, 1929, in Lookout, Idaho, the seventh of 11 children. Erma told many stories of her life growing up in Lookout and Gifford.

After graduating from Lewiston High School in 1947, she went to work as a telephone operator in Lewiston where she made many lifelong friends. She married Robert L. Auer on June 21, 1949, in Clarkston. After her marriage, she became a housewife and lovingly raised her four boys. She was very proud of her service on the election board starting back in the mid-1960s. She would walk door to door encouraging folks in her precinct to register to vote. Erma and Bob spent many hours in the bleachers watching their grandsons participate in sporting events. In later years, Erma enjoyed watching her great-granddaughters participate in sports also.

Erma loved to write poetry and often encouraged others to write down their thoughts. She could never explain where her poems came from; she always said she would just sit down and begin to write.

She is survived by her sons, David L. and wife Sandy of St. Maries, Donald R., Rodney D. and wife Sharon, and Darrin R., all of Lewiston; grandchildren Jason and Scott Auer of Lewiston, Lori Young and husband Brad of St. Maries, and Jim Auer and wife Michelle of Fernwood; beloved great-granddaughters, Kerstin, Kelsey, and Kaylee Auer and Tristen Young; great-grandson Toby Young; her sister, Carol (Holle) Plaehn of Tacoma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings Martin, Emil, Hulda, Walt, Lester, Betty, Velma, Thelma and Ione.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 920 Eighth Ave., Lewiston, followed by a burial at Normal Hill Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Pat Fowler and her staff at Golden Girls Residential Care for their loving care of Erma during the last months of her life.
