Henry “Hank” George Nelson, 83, of Lewiston, passed away Friday, July 20, 2018, at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Lewiston.
Henry was born to Fred and Olive (Pierce) Nelson on Dec. 31, 1934, in Deary. He attended school in Helmer and later in Moscow. At age 18, Hank enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for eight years. After serving in the military, he lived with his parents and worked various jobs: Pullman bakery, Spokane Firestone, Kellogg-Fernwood garnet mines and Moscow Cemetery.
Hank and his parents enjoyed traveling and camping around the Northwest. After he was no longer able to live on his own, he moved to the Idaho State Veterans Home. He loved being there, and you could always find Hank at the Canteen Room sipping on a Pepsi while having conversations with fellow veterans. He also enjoyed having lunch and visiting with his sister, Bert, her husband, Vern, and his niece, Bess, and her husband, Chuck, at the canteen. The Veterans Affairs home would take the veterans on outings to different functions during the year; Hank’s favorite was the fishing trips. He also looked forward to going for weekly pie with his nephew, Tom, at Wasem’s in Clarkston.
Hank was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and their spouses, Marian (Bob) Webster and Betty (Ted) Keller; brothers and their spouses, Norman (Sally) Nelson and Victor (Judy) Nelson; and brother-in-law Vern Hendrix. He is survived by his sister, Bertha (Bert) Hendrix, and many nieces and nephews. Hank’s family wishes to thank everyone at the VA home for the excellent care that was given to him during his stay.
Graveside memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 28, 2018, at the Moscow Cemetery. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.
