On April, 4, 1944, (4/4/44) Joan Rae Young was born to John R. Young and Cecelia C. (Mengas) Young in Lewiston. She passed away Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, of natural causes.
Joan was the first of three children who grew up helping in her parents' store, Y-B Market, reading all the latest magazines. That is where her love for reading began. She attended Lewiston High School, where she played clarinet in the Lewiston marching band, graduating in 1966. Joan earned a two-year teaching degree at Lewis-Clark State College in 1968.
Joan then traveled to Burns, Ore., to be an elementary school teacher. She spent her summer vacations in Lewiston pursuing a library degree at the University of Idaho, which brings her back to her love of reading. After attaining her library degree, Joan became the school librarian at Henry L. Slater Elementary School in Burns, Ore.
While in Burns, she married Daniel D. Campbell in September 1970. They had two children. Joan relocated to Clarkston and began her career of 25 years at the Washington State University Veterinarian Library. Commuting to Pullman and back each day in a carpool reunited her with a childhood friend, Judi Beeson, who continued to be her best friend into her final days of life.
Joan retired in 2009 to be a full-time grandma and to pursue more reading. Her grandchildren were the joy in her life. Although Joan's health didn't provide her the opportunity to attend all of their activities, Joan was their biggest fan and the stories that they told were far better than the games themselves. Besides reading, some of her favorite activities included bingo with her granddaughter, Legos with her grandson, card games with friends and any family gathering.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Cecelia and John; and her husband, Daniel.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Cara (Ryan)
Newhouse; two grandchildren, Sienna and Silas
Newhouse; son Dan Campbell Jr.; brother John R. (Sandy) Young Jr.; sister Patti (Dick) Hansen; two nieces; two nephews; and a great group of cousins.
