John Charles Peacock, devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, passed away with his wife and son by his side on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015.
John was born Jan. 13, 1948, in Portland, Ore. He was adopted by his loving parents, John and Molly Peacock of Kellogg, Idaho, shortly after his birth. His brother, Mike Peacock of Pinehurst, Idaho, recalls John's amazing ability to build. One of his first major projects was a baseball backstop he designed and built for all the neighborhood kids. He loved practical jokes as he was growing up, and he continued to make others smile throughout his life. His love of building continued as he created a 1,200-square-foot addition to his Lewiston home and welded a massive frame for his J-Rig rafting excursions.
John excelled academically in high school and was active in many school activities at Kellogg High School. He was an officer in DeMolay and had a passion for snow skiing. He graduated from Kellogg High School in 1966. John continued his education and North Idaho Junior College and finished his education at the University of Idaho, with a bachelor of science in general studies in 1974. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity during his years at the University of Idaho. He met the love of his life, Janet Gilmour, in 1972 at the University of Idaho. They were married Dec. 29, 1973, at the Presbyterian Church in Moscow. They moved to Lewiston in 1975, so he could accept the position of assistant manager, and a few years later manager for Associates Financial Services. Their son, John "Johnny" Inglis Peacock, was born in 1979 in Lewiston. In 1980, he became an insurance agent for Vaughn Insurance in Lewiston. His 33-year career in insurance ended with the final 10 years as the owner/agent of Peacock Vaughn Insurance in Clarkston. He retired in 2013.
John was involved in many civic and sporting activities. He was the chairman of Ducks Unlimited for several years, was a sponsor for Pheasants Forever and was one of the original organizers of the Idaho Fish and Game Youth Hunt. In the early '90s John began competing with his English setters, and later his German shorthairs in National Shoot to Retrieve Association field trials throughout the Northwest and Montana. He became a field trial judge and continued to compete and judge until 2014. John and Janet considered their NSTRA friends to be their second family. John was a Mason and supported many Shriner activities and charities. He was an officer for many years for the Clarkston Rotary Club, and was the chairman of the Clarkston Free Parking organization. He found immense joy in his involvement with the small Clarkston Christmas Lighting Committee. He spent hundreds of hours each year making sure Clarkston's Vernon Park and the streets of Clarkston were aglow with Christmas spirit.
John, Janet and Johnny enjoyed camping, rafting, fishing and bird hunting as a family. John and his family spent many years fishing and visiting his wife's parents at Priest Lake, Idaho. John loved deep sea fishing. Janet and Johnny remember fondly all their Newport, Ore., vacations. John and Janet became snowbirds several years before his retirement. They spent many warm and carefree winter days in Yuma, Ariz., nestled in their motor home. John and Janet loved this desert oasis.
John is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Janet Peacock of Lewiston; his son, Johnny Peacock of Clarkston; brother Michael (Nancy) Peacock of Pinehurst, Idaho; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. His faithful German shorthair companion, Fritz, was by his side when the Lord brought him home.
John's funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 9, at All Saints Catholic Church in Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, we would like to suggest donations to the Shriners or the Clarkston Christmas Lighting Committee, in care of Dave Clark, Twin Rivers Bank, Clarkston.
We would like to thank Dr. Pant, Dr. Adam Bell, Tri-State Memorial Hospital, St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Holy Family Hospital and the St. Joseph Hospice staff for their loving care of John during his yearlong courageous battle with cancer.
