Lawrence "Marvin" Cleveland, 77, formerly of Moscow, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 14, 2016, in Lewiston. He was born Jan. 8, 1939, in Moscow, to Gene and Ella Cleveland.
Marvin married June Fredrickson on Feb. 20, 1960. They raised their three children, Scott, Todd and Gina, in Moscow.
Marvin was a hard worker, beginning at a very young age. He was a jack-of-all-trades. At a young age, he owned and drove a truck. He owned and operated the Moscow Conoco station and later became a salesman at Delta Ford, Midway Datsun and Western Home Center. He was an active member of the Nez Perce County Sheriff's Posse. Ultimately, he worked for Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine for 19 years, and was one of two people with the title veterinary engineer technician. He was the go-to person when any equipment for the large animal hospital needed altered or fabricated. He was especially proud of the role he played in the design and production of the ambulance created for Emerald Downs Race Track in Auburn, Wash.
After retirement, he and his friend, Gene Wightman, were the "MacGyvers," who could redesign and build anything. Suffice it to say that their construction was stronger than comparable retail designs.
Marvin was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed snowmobile riding, fishing, hunting, camping, boating, four-wheeling and trail riding with family and friends. He enjoyed exploring most of the Western states and Vancouver Island. He traveled twice to Alaska and he even gave Maui a try. In 2003, Marvin and June began traveling to Arizona, which led to the development of many special friendships with fellow snowbirds.
Marvin will be missed by sons Scott Cleveland (Kim DeMeerleer), and Todd Cleveland (Cathy Cleveland); daughters Gina Rinehart (Chris Clegg) and Tammy Cleveland (Cody Gray); granddaughters Carrie Cleveland (Gary Geis), and Courtney Turnbaugh (Donny Turnbaugh); and great grandson Darren Cleveland. He is also survived by many members of June's family, as well as half-siblings Betty Biggam, Deborah Hammerly and Ralph Cleveland; his stepfather, Ralph Haley; and stepsiblings Tom, David and Darryl Haley, and Denise Acuff.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, June; his grandson, Travis Cleveland; several in-laws including Art and Irene Fredrickson, Orval Fredrickson and Joe Parkins; his parents; and his elder brother, Wayne Cleveland.
A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Lewiston Red Lion Hotel Seaport Ballroom.
