Mary Alliene York, a longtime resident of Elk City, died of natural causes Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, in Lewiston. She was 94.
Mary was born Aug. 30, 1924, in Tacoma. She spent her childhood in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
Mary and Wallace B. York were married in Lewiston on June 16, 1941. Their first home was a tent on Red River near Elk City.
In 1945, Wally and Mary bought a ranch in Elk City from Wally’s father. Wally and Mary were true partners in life. She was blessed to be married to a man who adored her.
During retirement years, Wally and Mary enjoyed traveling to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with their close friends and spending time at their homes in Elk City and Lewiston. Following Wally’s death, Mary moved to Newman Lake, Wash., to be close to family.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Lynnet (Jim) Brumaugh of Elk City and Newman Lake, Wash.; two sons, Tom (Julia) York of Elk City and Eagle, Idaho, and Jeff York of Newman Lake; her brother, Robert (Marge) Sumpter of Clearwater; her daughter-in-law, Linda York of Elk City; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Wally York; her son, Travis York; her grandson, Kraig Brumaugh; her brothers, Leslie Forler and Jack Sumpter; her sister, Alcine Pitcher; and her daughter-in-law, Kathryn Cox.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Community Church in Elk City.
In remembrance of Mary, donations may be made in her name to the Elk City School.
