Mary Catherine Morris, age 92, passed away May 3, 2016, at her home in Lewiston, surrounded by family. She was born April 2, 1924, in Lewiston, to M.A. Roos and Mary C. Roos. She was adopted by J.M. Hardin and Bess Hardin in 1924.
Mary was raised in Lewiston. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1942 and from St. Joseph's Hospital as a registered nurse in 1945. Mary was a nurse cadet during World War II. She worked most of her nursing career as a staff nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mary's career as an active nurse spanned 44 years. She retired in 1986.
In 1945, Mary married Virgil E. Morris in Lewiston. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Mary is survived by daughter and son-in-law Catherine Morris and Lonnie Lane of Lapwai; son and daughter-in-law David and Kathleen Morris of Post Falls, Idaho; daughter Rebecca Morris of Walla Walla; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother and one granddaughter.
Mary's great loves were her family, her home and her dogs. Her love of flower gardening is showcased in her beautiful yard. Over the years, she shared numerous plants with family and friends. Everyone knew that the rule was, "You can dig whatever starts you want, just make sure you fill in the hole!" In her later years, Mary spent many fun hours on her iPad - communicating with her Facebook friends, posting opinions and contributing information about growing up in Lewiston. Mary was small in stature but big in spunk. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Mary's family would like to thank Rhoda Hanson and Arleen Watson for their years of service helping Mary stay in her own home. They were not just employees, they became her friends. We also want to thank Dr. Leah Jones and the nurses on 3C for their compassionate care of Mary in her final days. Their exceptional help made it possible to move her home, according to her wishes. She was able to look out at her yard and pet her dog one last time.
At Mary's request, no services will be held. Memorial donations may be made to the Lewis Clark Animal Shelter.
Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
