Richard “Dick” R. Phillips passed away peacefully Monday, Dec. 31, 2018, at his Lewiston home. He was 82.
Papa Dick (also known as “Red Eye” and “Sarge”) was born in Lewiston on Oct. 19, 1936, to Dr. Harry Phillips and Mellie Clinton Phillips. He attended school in Lewiston, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Mosher, on Oct. 22, 1954. Over their 64 years of marriage, he and Sandra made many wonderful memories together. Of these, the most special being their three children: Rich, Jim and Shelley.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1957. After his time in the service, he returned to Lewiston, where he held jobs as a gas station attendant, gas station owner, fireman/ambulance driver, bread truck driver and a mill worker at Potlatch Corp. He retired from Potlatch in 1999.
He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, a volunteer baseball and football coach for the Boys and Girls Clubs and an avid Lewis-Clark State Warriors women’s basketball fan. He and Sandra sponsored two players each year for many years, and attended as many games as they could, along with attending a national championship to watch his girls play.
He is survived by his widow, Sandra, at their Lewiston home; his two sons, Rich (Jody) Phillips of Everett, Wash., and Jim (Karen) Phillips of Denver; one daughter, Shelley (Ron) Rudolph-Williams of Lewiston; six grandchildren, Joe (Paige) Phillips, Steven (Stephanie) Phillips, Breanna (Eric) Woodhouse, Whitney (Jason) Barnes, Natalie (Johnnie) Rodriguez and Sandi (Ryan) Snyder; and six great-grandchildren, Phoebe, Bridgett, Ryan, Millie, Mia and Lucy.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Elks Lodge in Lewiston. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.

Lots of memories. Best man at my wedding. I prayed much for Dick and Sandra. He was a good friend. May God be with his family, I hope to see him in heaven not long from now.
