Richard P. Young

Richard P. Young

11/27/1962 — 9/6/2018

Richard Peti Young, husband, father, son, brother, coach and friend to many, passed away in his sleep Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018, at his home.

Richard was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on Nov. 27, 1962. He spent a happy island childhood in New Zealand with his parents, Rick and Sera Young, and brothers Maliko and Ike.

He came to the United States in 1977. He started school at Sacajawea Junior High School and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1981. He excelled in many sports and was a three-year letterman in football. Following graduation, he attended Spokane Falls Community College and continued playing football and made many lifelong friends.

Richard married his high school sweetheart, Karlene Eisele, on June 15, 1985. They soon started their family and had three children, Tyler, Kayla and John. He started his career in the grocery business, beginning at Dodd’s Family Grocery and later moved to working for Albertsons in 1985, starting in the produce department and working his way up to manager, the position he held at the time of his death. He enjoyed interacting with his many customers and was well known for his friendly and positive attitude. He developed close relationships with his Albertsons co-workers over the course of his 33-year career.

Richard and Karlene were very involved with their children and enjoyed coaching them in various sports over the years, and also supporting them in their many school activities. He was always very proud of their accomplishments. After he ran out of his own kids to coach, he moved on to coaching and assisting with the seventh-grade football team at Jenifer Junior High School. He truly enjoyed interacting and mentoring the many students and helping them learn, grow and enjoy his favorite sport of football.

Richard enjoyed socializing and spending time with family and friends, which usually included some type of game, like playing pool or darts. When it came to card games, cribbage, Uno or poker, you could count on Richard to be “all in.”

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 33 years, Karlene Young; children Tyler, Kayla (fiancee Orlando Gallegos) and John; his parents, Rick and Sera Young; brothers Maliko (Marjorie) and Ike (Cyndi); mother-in-law Lovetta Eisele; and a large extended family including many brothers- and sisters-in-law, cousins, aunts, uncles and numerous nieces and nephews who adored him. He also will be terribly missed by his faithful dog, Ariki.

A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Warrior Ballroom at the Red Lion. Come celebrate his life with us and wear your favorite football attire.

Richard, we love you and miss you and will meet again some day. There is a hole in all of our hearts that will never be filled.
