Ruby B. Howard Young, 96, of Lewiston, died Jan. 18, 2017, at Kindred Care in Lewiston.
She was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Rexburg, Idaho, to Gilbert Campbell and Lydia Mae Hansen Scott Campbell. She was Gilbert's only child. From Lydia's first marriage to Dan Anderson, she had two half brothers, Andrew Glenn Anderson and Dan Anderson; and half sisters Marie Anderson (Scism) and Venna Mildred Anderson (Willey). When she was 5 years old, her mother died and she was legally adopted by her uncle and aunt, Thomas Ray Scott and Mary Victoria Hansen. Stepsiblings were Ida LaPrele (Elg), Arvilla Orlene (Holst) and Robert Ray Scott.
At the age of 14, she left the family home and went to work for a family in Idaho Falls. She worked for room and board while attending high school and graduated in 1939, which she was very proud of.
In 1941, Ruby moved to Seattle to work, where she met up again with her high school sweetheart, Rex B. Howard, who was stationed at Fort Hood. They were married Sept. 5, 1941. While her husband was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, she returned to Idaho Falls to be near family. Daughter Patricia C. Howard was born in 1942 there. When the war was over, Rex met Pat, for the first time - she was 3 years old. Sons followed Pat; Albert Dean in 1948 and Glen Douglas Howard 1950. Rex died in 1962.
Ruby married Claud Young in 1963. To this union, Janice Young was born in 1964. They lived in Idaho Falls until their retirement. In 1983, they moved to Lewiston to be near family. Claud died in 1988.
While living in Idaho Falls, Ruby worked in a potato dehydration plant for 32 years. She also kept a large garden and canned fruits and vegetables. She loved to sew and was an awesome cook who made delicious breads. She loved having friends and family over and her generosity and hospitality was well-known. In Lewiston, she enjoyed gardening, embroidery, baking cookies, making candy and serving others. She participated in the Nez Perce County Fair for several years. She received many blue ribbons and won the Merit Award for her delicious ginger snap cookies. She was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved spending time with her family.
Ruby is survived by all of her children, daughter Patricia (Larry Kraus); sons Dean Howard and Glen Howard (Debbie); and daughter Janice Young (Kevin Keatts); and four stepchildren, Steve Young (Libby), LaWanna (Denny) Thomas, Mike Young (Shawna) and LaRita Galindo. She currently has, between the two marriages, 43 grandkids, 135 great-grandkids and 65 great-great-grandkids. Ruby was preceded in death by her husbands; both sets of parents; all siblings; and son Dean's wife, Margret.
