The 1940s found Shirley and her parents leaving Potlatch to move to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley, where her father worked at the Potlatch Forests Inc. mill. Shirley found work with the state of Washington and married Edgar H. Jolstead on Jan. 29, 1950. They made their first home in Lewiston. After the birth of their daughter, Deyanne, the couple moved to a home in nearby Clarkston. Shirley continued working for the Washington State Health and Welfare Department, and later accepted a position with the health insurance provider Medical Service Bureau, Blue Shield of Idaho. In the 1960s, she accepted the position of office manager for Walter Siebly, M.D., and later with Paul Lambert, M.D. She held this position until her retirement in early 1987.
Shirley was a past member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, was an active leader in Campfire and served as the secretary for the Elvedalen Lodge No. 129 of the Sons of Norway.
After her retirement, Shirley remained active with her gardening and handcrafts. After the death of her husband of 53 years, Shirley continued to live in their home in the Clarkston Heights. In the fall of 2014, after a serious illness, she moved to Boise to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed her new home and many friends at Chateau de Boise.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Deyanne Jolstead Toweill, and her son-in-law, Dale Toweill of Boise; grandchildren Jim and Teale Toweill and Teale's husband Justin Lock; as well as her nieces and nephew; and her close friends who provided her with many years of love and support.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Vineland Cemetery. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
