Steven Barnes

9/3/1955 — 12/23/2017

Steven Douglas Barnes, 62, died unexpectedly Dec. 23, 2017, in Lewiston, of a massive heart attack. He was the husband of Sharon Bishop Barnes. They shared 40 years of marriage together.

Born Sept. 3, 1955, in Clarkston, he was the only child born to Janice Martin Barnes and C. Gordon Barnes. They later divorced, and his mother was remarried to Lester Larson of Lewiston in 1959, when Steve was 4 years old.

Steve graduated from Lewiston High School in 1973 and attended classes at Lewis-Clark State College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private in September 1973, and was honorably discharged in 1974 after breaking his ankle during boot camp.

Steve entered the police academy in Pocatello before moving to Moscow in 1974 to become a peace officer for the city of Moscow. He met his wife, Sharon Loree Bishop, in high school, and they were married in July 1977. They had two children. He transferred in 1984 to the Moscow wastewater treatment plant, where he was employed until his passing.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and belonged to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Steve's favorite moments were spent in the mountains, hunting, camping, picking huckleberries and mushrooms - just enjoying the outdoors.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Janice; father Gordon; stepbrother Glen Law; and both sets of maternal and paternal grandparents.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Potlatch; son Dirk of Lewiston; daughter Adonna of Boise; stepfather Lester Larson of Lewiston; stepsiblings Kimberly (Bud) Smith of Culdesac, Louis (Claudia) Barnes of Lapwai, Krystal Barnes Frank of Helena, Mont., and Vickie Robinson of Boise; and a host of longtime friends.

A celebration of life for Steve will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Moscow 1912 Center, 412 E. Third St. Steve wanted his ashes to be spread in the mountains, therefore there will be no interment nor graveside service. In honor of Steve's love of everything camouflage, we ask that you wear something camo to the service.

Flowers and condolences may be offered at 165 Pine St., Potlatch, ID 83855. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Lewiston police officers, Lewiston Fire Department paramedics, and the hospital staff at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center for their tireless efforts and kindness - also to friends, family, and co-workers for the sympathy, comforting words, prayers and all expressions of kindness and concern.
