Theodore “Mark” Blacker passed away in his home, surrounded by his family and friends, at the age of 78 on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025.
Mark was born Oct. 20, 1947, in Moscow. He grew up in Moscow and graduated from Moscow High School in 1965. He attended the University of Idaho for a short time before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1967. He served four years of active duty and two years in the reserves, spending a year in Vietnam. He served on the USS Camberra and the USS Piedmont. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. During his service, he trained as an electrical repairman and was honorably discharged in 1973.
After leaving the service, Mark became a journeyman electrician with Strom Electric in Troy, as well as Blacker Electric with his father. He later worked for Washington State University Facilities Operations for 16 years, until his medical retirement in 1995.
Mark married Catherine Nirk in 1967, and they had one child, Shawn. They later divorced, and in 1979 he married his wife of 46 years, Donna, who had two small children. Mark was an avid fisherman, hunter, trapshooter and so much more. He loved to help teach all the young relatives to enjoy the outdoors as much as he did.
Mark is survived by his wife, Donna Romans Blacker, at their home in Moscow; his children Shawn Blacker (Alicia), of Potlatch; Tammy Moses (Elias), of Kamiah; and Cynthia Storment, of Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Stockwell, of Colfax; and a very special family member, Russell McNeel (Heidi), who gave the ultimate “gift of life” by donating his kidney to Mark, giving all of us an additional 22 years with him. That gift allowed Mark to watch his grandchildren grow up and to enjoy his great-grandchildren. Mark is also survived by eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a large extended family who loved him dearly.
Mark is preceded in death by his parents, Theodore “Ted” M. Blacker and Mary “Naomi” Batzel Blacker, of Moscow; and his brother, Darrell Turnidge, of Ohio.
A public funeral is not planned at this time per Mark’s request.
Memorials are suggested to the Polycystic Kidney and Liver Foundation, the Providence Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Surgical Center in Spokane or a foundation of the donor’s choice.
Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.
