Bette Jane (Mattson) Hallingstad was born May 21, 1933, at Yakima, to Del and Myrtle (McCadden) Mattson. She grew up with her sister, Sue, in the Yakima area, and graduated from Davis High School. In 1954, she proudly became the wife of Jack Hallingstad. In that ceremony she also became a special mom to Jack's daughter, Kathi. Together they have two sons, Ken and Andy.
Bette and Jack raised their children in Yakima, where they owned Valley Lock and Key Service, working every day together. Upon the sale of their business, the couple sought a warm place for their retirement. With the help of their sons, they built their dream home on the Big Island of Hawaii, moving in 1983. They welcomed many visitors to their home and enjoyed showing them their beautiful Hawaii. Until 2012, Bette and Jack flew to the mainland each year, opened up their stored motor home and traveled across the U.S. They loved to explore new places, visit family and make new friends, but always boarded the plane back to Hawaii at the first hint of snow.
Bette passed into rest Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Guardian Angel Homes in Lewiston, where she received special care for advanced Alzheimer's disease. She will be forever loved and dearly missed by her husband, Jack, and sons Ken and Andy (Donna), all of Kailua-Kona Hawaii; and daughter Kathi (Wayne McCulley) of Lewiston. She is survived by her sister, Sue (Ray Fousha) of Texas; brother Marvin Garrett of Nevada; as well as seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A private family service is planned. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston is in charge of the arrangements.
