Bob J. Platz, of Lewiston, passed away Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, at his home, while surrounded by his family.
He was born Aug. 31, 1927, in New Plymouth, Idaho, to Martin and Mildred Platz and was one of five children. He graduated from New Plymouth High School in 1946, worked for a local logging company, then entered active service with the U.S. Navy in 1948. He served two tours of duty with distinction in the Korean War as radar operator on the USS Perkins, reaching the rank of 2nd class petty officer.
In November of 1952, Bob entered the University of Idaho to study forestry. There he met Peggy Remacle of Cottonwood. They were married in 1956 and started a family. After graduation from the University of Idaho with a Bachelor of Science in forestry, he worked for 17 years as forester, assistant district administrator and wood products development for the state of Washington, Department of Natural Resources. He then accepted a position with Western Forest Industries Association as a consultant for 17 years representing member mills' interests located in Washington, Idaho, Montana and parts of Oregon. He retired in 2000, when Bob and Peggy traveled extensively to take in many sights and visit with family. Family was his greatest joy, and he also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years, Peggy Platz; their two sons, Robert (Holly), of Olympia, and Michael (Nancy Sue), of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; grandson Chase of Mount Pleasant; sister Dorothy Evans of Boise; sister-in-law Ellamae Platz of Stockton, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Cottonwood, followed by a burial service at the Cottonwood Cemetery.
