Doug Mayer, 74, was met at the pearly gates by his faithful companion Cooper on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023. He was born Jan. 24, 1949, to Herman Joseph Mayer and Margery Alice Becker, in Spokane.
Doug graduated from Genesee High School in 1967 and attended Lewis-Clark State College where he was a sprinter on the track team.
He served in the Army National Guard from 1969-75 earning a Specialist E5 rank as a sharpshooter.
Doug married Victoria Ann Keiffer on July 3, 1971, in San Diego. They made their home in Genesee where they lived from 1971-2012, when they moved to Lewiston.
Doug worked for Nuxoll Construction from 1970-76. He started his own company, Mayer Construction, and managed the business from 1976 until his retirement in 2008.
He enjoyed being outdoors spending time engaged in some of his favorite pastimes — fishing from his jet boat and hunting. Doug and Vickie also enjoyed traveling in their motor home, visiting many states together. Four years ago, he and Vickie visited Europe for a month and explored a number of different European countries.
He never missed a Gonzaga Bulldogs basketball game and traveled with Vickie every year to the tournament in Las Vegas. He was also a big LCSC Warrior baseball fan.
Doug was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Genesee and served as president of the parish council several times.
Family was most important to him; he loved his three sons and grandchildren and went to all their sporting events until he was no longer able.
Doug is survived by his spouse, Victoria Ann Mayer, at their Lewiston home; sons and their spouses: Jeremy (Tonia) Mayer, of Genesee; Jason (Kristy) Mayer, Genesee; and Kevin (Kali) Mayer, Lewiston; brothers: Dwight (Jody) Mayer, Genesee; and Bill (Carol) Mayer, Genesee; sisters Paula (Larry) Everingham, Boise; and Cheryl (Sheldon) Hampton, Boise; brother-in-law Mike Becker, Beaverton, Ore.; and grandchildren: Cierra (Garrett) Borth, Brooklyn Mayer, Taylor Mayer, Jack Mayer, Rory Mayer, Evan Weidner-Durst, and Breonna Mayer. His beloved four-legged companion Charlee also survives him.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Herman Joseph and Margery Alice Mayer, and sister Michelle Becker.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 138 Jackson St., Genesee, with Father Mike St. Marie officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lewis Clark Animal Shelter, Six Shelter Road, Lewiston, ID 83501.
A special thank you goes to Elite Home Health and St. Joseph Family Hospice for making it possible for Doug to remain home during his final journey.
