Eleanor J. (Kachelmier) Langdon passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, in Lewiston at age 92. She was born July 2, 1925, in Nezperce, the fourth child of Alois and Cecelia (Ahlers) Kachelmier. She spent her early years as a Benedictine nun and taught in various schools throughout Idaho. After leaving the convent, she moved to Portland, Ore., and taught many years in the Portland School District. During that time, she and William Hooper were married and later were divorced.
She retired in 1986, and joined her family in Lewiston. In 1991, she married James Rufus Langdon and moved to Nezperce. They spent many years fishing, going to rodeos and traveling with a recreational vehicle group. In 2007, they moved to Boise. Eleanor returned to Lewiston in 2013, and has lived here since.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; four sisters, Isadore, Viola "Kay" Belknap, Iona Baune and Sister Valine Kachelmier; and brothers Leslie, Richard and Kenneth.
She is survived by her sister, Clarice (Jack) Riggs; her four stepdaughters, Janet (Dee) Huntley, Mary Jo (Richard) Latham, Betty (Mark) Heath and Barbara Langdon, and their families, including six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by 23 nephews and nieces and their families.
Eleanor was a very strong and independent woman with a very sweet and gentle disposition. The family enjoyed her sharp, witty nature and loved spending time with her. She will be greatly missed.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated a 10:30 a.m. Friday, at All Saints Catholic Church, 3330 14th St., Lewiston, with a luncheon to follow. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Nezperce.
