On Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, Jeanne (Geneva) M. Samsel passed and went home to be with Jesus. Jeanne was born to J. B. "Ben" and Johanna Engel in Cottonwood on May 11, 1933.
She grew up in Cottonwood and graduated from St. Gertrude's Academy. She met the love of her life, Leslie Samsel, and they were married shortly out of high school. They lived a number of their early years in Cottonwood, one short year in Sandpoint, Idaho, and in Lewiston for the remainder of their lives. Jeanne worked, up until her recent illness, for the past 27 years at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. She was a smiling face that helped people get checked into either the emergency room or admitting departments. She was a warm woman who enjoyed life and people, laughed freely and worked very hard all her life. She was a dear soul, who will be missed greatly by those who knew her well.
Jeanne is survived by daughter Cherie Ashby (Allen) and son Patrick, all of Lewiston. In addition, she has three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Leslie.
Jeanne enjoyed spending time with her family, especially birthdays and holidays. Christmas always held a special place in her heart and she so loved being surrounded by her family, especially on Christmas Eve.
She loved the outdoors and camping with family and friends, traveling on the Oregon Coast, shooting her Glock in Glock Sport Shooting Foundation outdoor matches, being a Friend of the National Rifle Association and enjoying a little bingo at the casino.
A celebration of her life with a covered-dish dinner will be held at noon Sept. 9, at Winchester State Park at the Ponderosa Point shelter. Please bring a chair, your favorite food to share, and any fond memories you may wish to share also. Suggested memorials: to the Union Gospel Mission of Spokane, for which she had a fondness.
