Stephen “Steve” Vernon Howell passed away Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, at the age of 72. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, two sons and brother.
Born prematurely Oct. 20, 1951, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, to Lester V. and Gertrude E. Howell, Steve bravely fought his way into the world. He grew up in Clarkston, a town he always loved. Many people have received a history lesson about the valley from Steve, as he loved talking about the area and how it changed over the time his family has lived there.
In 1970, Steve graduated from Clarkston High School as a three-sport athlete for the Bantams, playing fullback and defensive end in football, a forward in basketball and a hurdler in track and field. He continued his athletic journey at Spokane Falls Community College where he played football and later earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Washington State University.
For 32 years, Steve dedicated himself to the telephone company in the valley, serving as a supervisor for a decade before retiring in 2009.
In October 1978, fate brought Steve and his beloved wife Diane together when she delivered a cake to his place of business, for his birthday. They were married on April 19, 1980, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lewiston. Their two sons, Travis William (born Oct. 25, 1981) and Brandon Stephen (born Nov. 6, 1984), were the light of Steve’s life. A devoted father, he spent 42 years creating cherished memories with his family, engaging in activities like camping, attending sports events, riding motorcycles and flying in airplanes piloted by his sons. Steve could always be found at their games, cheering and coaching them on. He continued this unwavering support with his grandchildren and their activities. Steve did all he could to take care of and be with his family. His family was the most important part of his life.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Les and Gert. He is survived by his loving wife Diane; their son Travis’s family (Travis, Allyssa, Owen and Avery); their son Brandon’s family (Brandon, Katy, Elly and Briannah); his older brother Jerry; and his loyal dog Charlie.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at St. Joe’s and to Sister Margie Schmidt for their dedicated care and support, comforting presence and unwavering kindness during Steve’s time there.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Asotin County Fire Department/Mission Church, 2377 Appleside Blvd., Clarkston. Casual attire is encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in memory of Steve Howell to the Riverview Animal Clinic in Clarkston.
