On Jan. 14, 2018, the heavens gained another angel. Vernon L. Kraut went to be with his father, mother and oldest sister. He was born Jan. 26, 1942, to Lawrence C. and Teresa M. (Warnecke) Kraut.
Vernon grew up on the family farm in Genesee, the fifth of 10 children. He attended school at Genesee and graduated in 1960. He did a few odd jobs between high school and joining the National Guard in 1962. He retired from the civil service in 1997 and the Army National Guard in 2002.
Vernon and Wilma Cox were married on Nov. 18, 1967, in Coeur d'Alene. They were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Vernon enjoyed farming, camping, collecting trains and, most of all, spending time with the family. Vernon was a collector of things.
He was preceded in death by his parents, oldest sister Marie Mahan and grandson Andrew Bryan. He is survived by his wife, Wilma; children Lori (Mark) Bryan, John Kraut and Christine (Eric) Brewer; grandchildren Sara Wedel, Adam Bryan, James Bryan, Xavier Brewer, RuthAnn Brewer and Katie Brewer; siblings Norice (Henry) Nesbit, Joan (Doug) Douthit, Don (Jackie) Kraut, Margaret (Don) Grieser, Cheryl (Larry) Click, Carol (Larry) Vestal, Barbara (Bob) Grieser and Loren (Toni ) Kraut; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vernon was cremated and a memorial Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Parish, 3330 14th St., Lewiston. Donations can be made in his name to the American Heart Association.
