William S. "Bill" McVicars of Lewiston passed away Friday, Aug. 18, 2017.
Bill was born on Jan. 26, 1933, in Anaconda, Mont., to John and Agnus McVicars.
He grew up in Anaconda and Missoula, Mont., and graduated from the University of Montana. Bill met his wife, Bertha, in Missoula. They were married in 1955 and moved to Lewiston in 1960.
Bill is survived by Bertha and their four children: John McVicars (Julie) - children Chad and Jenna; Julie Earp (Bob) - child Jason; Nancy Hake (Dennis) - children Ian and Emily; and Susan Denny (Randy) - children Elizabeth, Melissa and Amanda. They also have five great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his only sibling, Jack, who was killed in World War II.
Bill was a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with his family, especially during the holidays and at the lake. He truly was the glue to all family events, ensuring that everyone would be brought together. For Bill, time spent at the cabin always entailed a good game of pinochle with his children and grandchildren. Bill was passionate about collecting and restoring old cars. He collected at least 20 old cars, which included a 1929 Packard and a 1940 La Salle. He was crazy about his dogs. He never met a dog he didn't like.
After almost 34 years, Bill retired in 1996 from First Federal Savings and Loan as chief executive officer and president. He was very involved in the community and business affairs during his banking years and after. He served as director and treasurer of the North Idaho Children's Home, president of Lewiston Orchards Kiwanis Club, chairman board of trustees and life member of Elks Lodge No. 896, president and 38-year member of the Crankers Club, board member of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle, and chairman and board of directors of Lewiston Historical Preservation Commission, to name a few. Bill, along with Bert, have been longtime members of St. James Catholic Church/All Saints Catholic Church.
A funeral Mass to celebrate Bill's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church with a rosary at 10 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Normal Hill Cemetery with lunch following at All Saints Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a donation to Lewis-Clark Animal Shelter, 6 Shelter Road, Lewiston, ID 83501, in memory of Bill McVicars.
